Take the name Anna Marie Smith. Convert each letter using the Pythagorean chart, where A through I are 1 through 9 and the cycle restarts at J. ANNA is 1+5+5+1 = 12. MARIE is 4+1+9+9+5 = 28. SMITH is 1+4+9+2+8 = 24. Add the three: 12+28+24 = 64. Reduce: 6+4 = 10, then 1+0 = 1. Anna Marie Smith has an expression number of 1. If a total lands on 11, 22 or 33 at any stage of the final reduction, stop there: those are master numbers and are read as both the master and its reduced digit. Two rules cause most errors. Use the name exactly as written on the birth certificate, with all middle names, not a nickname or a married name. And add the full name in one pass or by word, both give the same result; what you must not do is drop a letter because it is silent. A name change later in life produces a secondary expression number that describes how you present now, layered over the original.
