What the lunar nodes are

The nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path, always exactly opposite each other. They are not planets; they are mathematical points, which is why they carry a sense of fate rather than personality. Astrologically they are read as a life axis: the South Node holds the skills and patterns you arrived with, comfortable, automatic, already mastered, and the North Node points at the qualities your life keeps pushing you to grow into. How the North Node calculator works

The nodes move backwards through the zodiac, completing a full cycle in about 18.6 years, which means they spend roughly 18 months in each sign. This calculator computes the mean node's ecliptic longitude on your birth date from the standard lunar formula, converts it to a sign and degree, and gives the South Node as the exact opposite point. Birth time is not needed. The true node oscillates up to about 1.7 degrees around the mean node, which only matters if you sit right on a sign boundary, and the calculator flags that.

How do I find my South Node?

Do I need my birth time?

No, not for the sign. The nodes move about three minutes of arc per day, so the date is enough. You need birth time only for the house.

What is the difference between the mean node and the true node?

The mean node is the smoothed average position; the true node includes small wobbles caused by the Sun's pull. They differ by at most about 1.7 degrees. Most astrologers use one or the other consistently, and this calculator uses the mean node.

Is the North Node the same as the Dragon's Head?
