The rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact minute you were born. It sets your chart's entire house structure and describes your surface: how you enter rooms, your default body language, what people assume about you before you speak. The classic trio is Sun (who you are), Moon (how you feel), and rising (how you appear).
Why birth time matters so much here
The ascendant moves through all twelve signs every day, a new sign roughly every two hours. A birth time that is off by thirty minutes can flip your rising. If you do not know yours, your birth certificate usually has it, and the calculator flags results that sit close to a boundary.
Rising signs and attraction
In synastry, one person's planets landing on the other's ascendant is a classic instant-attraction signature, the chemistry of first sight. How that plays with the deeper layers is covered in birth chart compatibility.
