The test went viral on TikTok in 2023 and has not slowed down. The idea: find the phase of the moon on the night you were born, find your partner's, and put the two images side by side. If the lit parts combine into one full circle, you are moon phase soulmates. The visual is what made it spread, two half-moons snapping together into a whole, but underneath it is real astronomy. How the moon phase compatibility calculator works
The Moon cycles from new to full and back in 29.53 days, the synodic month. Your birth date is measured against a known new moon, the remainder tells how far into the cycle the Moon was, and that gives the phase and the percentage of the disc that was lit. Two dates give two illumination values. When the two values add up to roughly 100 percent, one waxing and one waning, the two crescents are mirror images and together they form a full moon. That is the match the test is looking for. The calculator also catches two other cases: the same phase on both dates (a mirror match) and the near-miss where the sum is close but not complete.
